Kukup Fishing Village

We will be going to this chalet in Kukup. It may not look like an exciting place but I think we can create "fun" there. If not, we still have the Virgo Cruise to look forward to :-)

Expensive and glamorous holidays to Paris or London ? I've been there. No guarantee of "fun".

Lihyenn irritates them ...

Gab rocks. He has determined what he wants, which includes computer games.

Nao is awesome. She knows what has to be done and doesn't need anyone to bug her about it.

Zac rules. He loves to read and play.

Lihyenn sometimes irritates them by talking about "work", but he can't help it, can't controlling that urge ... His consolation is that LL concurs with him about it most of the time.

An English-lesson for the Weiqi fraternity of Singapore ...

You can't "win" somebody. You can only win a game by beating/defeating somebody.

When you take a picture, you use the camera. When you take a photograph, you use your hand ? Anyway, "take a photograph", though acceptable in modern English, is incorrect in traditional English.

The Secret Of Success

If you have a good head/brain, you'll realise that you need 2 ingredients to achieve success.

The 1st is self-confidence. Find something that you can do well in and spare no effort to do well in it. When you can do well in something, you naturally feels that you can do well in anything.

The 2nd is motivation. Start with the end in mind and you're already half-way there.

All the best.

An Epic Battle

In the eyes of the kyu-level players, it was an epic battle. It took place over the internet between me, Lihyenn (White), and Zhangyiaoo (Black). If not for our many amateurish moves and mistakes caused by scarce thinking time, I would've called it our masterpiece.

It was professional-looking until B7. Black should've played a retreat at Q-6 or a pinch at L-3.

I was happy that Black played B21, a slow move. I was not sure whether my W22 was a good move. I guess I was worried that it would become difficult to infiltrate Black's right side if it raised its head at P-7. B23 should've approached the corner at F-17, the wider side.

W28 tried a Korean favorite although I did not know the follow-up variations. I just wanted to apply pressure on Black and remain in a sente position.

I thought my block with W32 was quite big. In retrospect, I should've played I-3 instead. It would've been a totally different game if I've done that. My W32 was worse ...and I felt sick to the core after playing those moves.

W40 couldn't let the black stones connect. B41 also didn't want to let the white stones connect.

W42 attacks. W54 tried to connect. When B55 attacks, White couldn't retaliate because it had to connect first, allowing B58 to form a moyo on the lower-right. W60 had no choice but to infiltrate it (只此一手).

The infiltration was quite successful but White was lagging in territory. It had to capture the black dragon if it wanted to win.

W72 found an opportune time to attack again. Were the scattering of white stones in the lower-left quadrant safe ? Making 2 eyes should not be a problem. White continued to attack with W100. W104 and W124 tried to cripple the black dragon. Was W134 necessary ? Shouldn't I've just played at C-9 ?

Was B157 a ko ? Oops, The black dragon lived with B165. I tried to get a consolation by chopping-off the dragon's tail with W170. However, this could've been a suicidal move because my own white dragon on the right could've been slaughtered.

B173 overlooked the chance to kill my white dragon at O-9, giving me the opportunity to save it with W174. However, White was still seriously lagging in territory.

B177's gote gave me the break I needed, another chance to win. This time, I've to target the total annihilation of the black group at the top. After W22, the black group was annihilated. Nevertheless, White was still lagging by 16 points. It was 官子功夫 thereafter. I must try to maintain sente all the way.

I must be wary of B203. Black should've played O-2 instead of B207. By not doing so, it allowed me to maintain the sente to play W208 and W210 which were what I was aiming for. It was huge ! B255 was a poor 官子 move.

I was able to close-out this battle with a win of 5.25 points ... albeit with the help of a couple of Black's mistakes.

my purpose in life

2007 World Youth Go Championship
1st Game - Singapore vs USA

A child of mine asked me what my purpose in life is. This question caught me by surprise. I thought about it for awhile and said : "to help all of you to succeed". He was satisfied with my answer.

I forgot to add “ … even if it means being naggy and unpopular.”.

Do you sometimes hesitate to do something due to shyness ?

The Animal Kingdom (170 words)

In the animal kingdom; everything is governed by the basic law of the jungle known as "Survival of the Fittest"; 优胜劣汰, 弱肉强食, 适者生存. The good will win and the bad will get eliminated. The weak will be eaten by the strong. Adapt and you will survive the competition.

The lion hunts and kill because he needs to survive. Whatever he kills, he eats on the spot.

There's no greed in the Animal Kingdom since money was never invented. The lion cannot keep the meat (in a refrigerator) for future consumption. Neither can he trade it for money or something else. Other that water, meat is the only thing he needs. PS : He needs to procreate to continue his genetic line, but that's another story.

So, do you want to live in the animal kingdom ? It may not have greed and other evils, but it may be too brutal and savage for the sophisticated human race …

My Perspectives on Religions and Motivational Speeches (274 words)

Some things have their genuine and important purposes in our human society (as opposed to the Animal Kingdom). In the Animal Kingdom, there's no need for Religions and Motivational Speeches.

Religions are around to keep our morals in check. When we're away from our home country, our moral standards drops. When there’re no religions, we've no moral standards.

Motivational Speeches are around to motivate us to do things that make ourselves better human beings, whatever that may be.

People like to ask Tiger Woods (or Roger Federal, or Michael Phelps,) what is the secret of his success, and motivational-speakers will always be on the trot to quote Tiger's answers.

What do you think will be Tiger's answer ? You're right if you surely didn’t think Tiger will say "The secret of my success ? I am much more talented than all of you professional golfers out there, and I am luckier than you.".

Tiger said "The secret of my success ? It is hard work and more hard work.". Tiger is being rhetorical. He can't jeopardize his public image and ruin his career by saying anything else and appeared cocky, can he ?

There're loads of professional golfers out there who train harder and work hard than Tiger but are struggling just to make a living. The reality is this : Tiger is simply just much more talented that all the rest of the professional golfers !

So, do we still want to listen to motivational-speakers ? Yes. In spite of all this, hard work is better than no hard work. We cannot 守株待兔. Religion is better than no religion.

My Daughter (107 words)

My daughter has a wonderful name. At least, that's what I strongly think. A wonderful name for a wonderful girl.

She is very clever; proficient in many things like Gymnastics, Chinese Calligraphy, Swimming, Reading and Drawing. She'll also be very good in playing the guitar once she starts to learn it. I endeavor to give her the most challenging environment to bring out the best in her. I can't waste her potential.

She is a very strong-willed girl with a mind of her own. Although sometimes I hope I can have a bigger say in her mind, she is completely fine without me 

My wonderful daughter.

A Philosophical Essay (397 words)

We want to do well in life and contribute to the world we arrived at.

Life is a long journey of learning through play and work. The more we learn, the more knowledgeable we become, and the more we can contribute to the world. A knowledge may be worth $1, it may be worth $1M, it may also be worth your life. Do you know what to say or do at the final question of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" ? when you come face to face with a grisly bear ? when the pilot of the plane you're flying in suddenly has a heart-attack ? It is not an over-statement to say that knowledge is priceless.

The learning environment is the school and our friends in it. Challenging environments bring out the best in us. If your environment is a platoon, your potential is a Lieutenant. If your environment is a brigade, your potential is a General ! Therefore, please go to Harvard in Boston USA, Beijing University in China, Tokyo University in Japan, NUS Medical School in Singapore ,... In your journey of learning, find something you're #1 in. That's your niche.

How good or knowledgeable must we be ? The people around us set the standard.

"行行出状元". 行 refers to profession. 状元 is the title conferred to the person who was first in the imperial examination in old China. You can become a 状元 in any 行 you choose, just be the best.

Tiger Woods earn millions. However, many professional golfers who play against Tiger are struggling just to make a living. 古力 make millions. However, professional weiqi player 廖行文 is still training hard and waiting for his own big break.

Although you can become a millionaire if you are the best Fried Kway Teow hawker in the world, it is better to be the best doctor in the world. This is because even if your are not the best in your medical profession, you won't fair too badly.

The mind is a terrible thing to waste. You are intelligent. After thinking about what you want, channel your energy into it. "塞翁失马,焉知非福". However, we do not want to 失马 no matter what. Remember, you are our living legacy to the world.

Homosexuality (57 words)

I hope you’ll agree that it is an un-natural act. It is against the law in Singapore.

Although it is impossible to understand why some people partake in homosexual activities, I see no reason to actively prosecute them if they’re not hurting others.

We should tolerate people with different religious views as well as different sexual orientations.

Casinos in Singapore (146 words)

A necessary evil that we must face. The gains far out-weigh the dangers. The key is to manage and mitigate all potential harms.

Legalising casinos (Integrated Resorts) will bring profits to the hotel industry, the restaurant industry, the retail industry, and all forms of entertainment industry. The influx of tourists will create many jobs in Singapore.

Other than economic gains, another advantage of legalising casinos (Integrated Resorts) is it will drive out its illegal underground cousins.

An underground casino, just like any other underground vices, is impossible to regulate. Therefore, we'll not be able to manage criminal activities like frauds, loan-sharking, money-laundering, etc.

The harm of driving casinos underground may be many-fold. This is the reason the Singapore government has legalised some form of gambling like lotteries, horse-betting and sports-betting, in the past. For the same reason, they have also turned-a-blind-eye to the vice of Prostitution.
